{ The Humber Mouth }

The Humber Mouth has now established itself as one of the regions liveliest festivals, celebrating literature, language, arts and music. This year we have focused on ideas and issues, using the festival to explore topics of local, national, and international interest literature, arts, politics, history, the environment, media and psychology.

Humber Mouth 2002 brings a number of top speakers to the city, including Tariq Ali, Oliver James, Blake Morrison, Pete McCarthy, Toby Litt, and Jon Ronson. Erich Hoyt, world expert on marine life, conservation and killer whales, will be speaking at The Deep, a venue which we are proud to be able to include in this years festival. There is live debate at Hull Truck brought by the Institute of Ideas from London, who have previously worked with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Tate Modern and the British Library. The panel includes writers, journalists and producers, including award winning historian Felipe Fernandez Armesto, author of Millennium and Civilizations, both major TV programmes.

There is again a strong element of theatre and performance with comedy from Weird Sisters; Northern Theatre Co. present The Vagina Monologues at Hull Truck and The Gasman Cometh at Wyke College; and there is a new play by Diane Dubois.

Humber Mouth 2002 has a number of projects and events for children and young people. Look out for Bigmouth, a Hull Daily Mail special supplement, written and devised by a group of young people from Hull. Working with journalist Matt Stephenson, the young people involved will produce an eight page newspaper which tackles the issues that impact on their lives. Attitudes is a youth project which involves young people, youth workers, writers and artists in a long term programme of creative workshops and training, looking at different attitudes to drugs and drug taking. As well as this, writers Nigel Hinton, Valerie Bloom, Bernard Ashley and Alan Durant will work with teenagers and children throughout the city, and poet Jack Mapanje will visit the Warren Centre to work around the issues facing Hulls new communities.

This years Humber Mouth sees a range of new festival partners, the Hull Daily Mail as a festival sponsor, and increased local involvement. It is now Hulls largest festival, bringing in speakers and performers of the highest standard, as well as contributing to the development of local arts and communities. We would like to thank all who have been involved in this years festival for their enthusiasm, energy and commitment.
